Teacher's Day Qaq Talk

taken from lipglossiping.com
Happy Teacher's Day!
I'm sure you've received at least several wonderfully worded SMSes, Facebook msgs or posts or tags & you even got a special gift from a minister!
Great, isn't it?

Enjoy it while you can because, after all the euphoria has died down, reality sinks in.
Some schools will never reach their potential because they are not special enough to receive the necessary funds.
Nincompoops are still leading schools into oblivion.
Teachers who are obedient & hard-working are still pushed into donkey jobs that have nothing to do with teaching when they are potentially able bring about fresh new ideas that may lift the school to brand new heights.
Teachers are still overburdened with useless work, nonsense work, pointless work & insignificant work. (exp: certain paperwork or programmes & especially trainings. Certain. Not all.)
Hard-working teachers & lazy teachers are still rewarded the same way. De facto.
Teachers are still not rewarded for their efforts/sacrifices/contributions/achievements.
All Nazir, education officers & policy makers want to see is still paperwork. Not actual work.
Teachers are also still considered excellent not because they are great at teaching but because they are great at paperwork.
Teachers are still rewarded based on how long they stay instead of how much they do.
Lazy teachers are still rewarded because they can stay for a long time & will be automatically promoted in 8 years time. (Just like hard-working teachers so why work so hard, right?)
Perks/promotions/offers are still not given to those who are able to do more with it but instead it is still given to those who have been teaching longer or those with connections or to fill up a racial quota.
Teachers are still putting more effort into tuition than school.
Corrupt educators are still unpunished.
10% of teachers are still doing 90% of the work.
90% percent of educators are still suffering from mental illnesses.

Year after year, I hear the same things.
Big shots will talk about how important teachers are or how great they are or what they have contributed or cite examples of teachers they know or cite examples of lives that have been touched or blardy blah blah.
They just find different ways to make teachers feel good about themselves.
Suddenly, all teachers are good & all teachers are great.
Suddenly, people CARE about us.

It's all blah blah blah to me.
What you say about us is NOT important.
What you say does NOT change the way I see myself.
What you DO is important.

I dont care about how great I am or how ppl should appreciate me or hug me or make me cards or smile at me or go home with me tonight.
Heck, I dont even care about a pay rise. Too many of us DO NOT deserve it.
I care about how I am going to get the resources I need to do what I need to do.
I care about how I can be free to do what is most important: Impact lives. Instead of spending the bulk of my time with paperwork or being bound by unwritten rules.
I care about being trusted & supported by parents when I discipline their child because NO MAN IS PERFECT. SO YOUR CHILD IS NOT PERFECT TOO!
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE WILL TO DISCIPLINE YOUR CHILD, LET ME DO IT!

This is the truth.
Wake up & smell the roses. They're dying.
And what are you doing about it?

I agree with you 100%... In reality, it sucks big time! That was why I could not wait to get out! The actual teaching part is great - it is everything else that gets one down. Just believe, like me, that what goes around comes around...and you will be abundantly blessed.

Ranting of an idealistic teacher - now I got a glimpse of how the system works and I can imagine the frustrations. I've always admired those who can really teach but I've not encountered many that can teach with passion and teach well. The only good teacher I had going to schools in Malaysia was a British lady that taught us English for three years from Form 1 to Form 3. She was tremendous, lots of activities, fun exercises, attentive. Whenever I think of a good teacher, I thought about her.

Arthur: It's no wonder the best teachers quit & go somewhere else while the bottom of the pot stay & stick to the pot.

Anny: Yes, it can be frustrating but teachers are forced to choose which is our priority: to teach or be an excellent bureaucrat.
